Enhancing bio-fertiliser mixing efficiency and abrasive slurry handling with Fristam Powder Mixer Technology

Portable skid-mounted powder induction and high-shear dispersion for liquid nutrient production

GET IN TOUCH

Introduction to the application and industry overview

Production of liquid bio-fertilisers, organic nutrient suspensions and agrochemical slurries requires reliable incorporation of dry powders, micronutrients and biological additives into liquid carriers while maintaining uniform nutrient distribution, suspension stability and consistent viscosity.

Processors frequently encounter abrasive organic solids, sand contamination, fluctuating rheology and changing plant layouts, all of which challenge conventional mixing equipment and increase maintenance, downtime and operating cost.

Fristam’s advanced inline powder induction combined with high-shear rotor-stator dispersion enables complete wetting, deagglomeration and homogeneous slurry formation, supporting efficient and scalable bio-fertiliser manufacturing.

Customer brief

A bio-fertiliser manufacturer required a mixing solution capable of handling:

  • Abrasive raw materials containing composted plant matter, animal-derived components and entrained sand or small stones
  • Variable viscosity formulations ranging from low-viscosity liquids to thicker organic suspensions
  • Frequent plant reconfiguration, demanding a portable, adaptable mixing system
  • Precise dispersion of chemical additives such as boric acid, calcium chloride and tripotassium citrate to ensure nutrient stability

Standard mixing equipment struggled to provide durability, flexibility and consistent dispersion, prompting evaluation of an alternative technology.

Previously unsuccessful methods

Conventional mixers in abrasive bio-fertiliser service typically suffer from:

  • Accelerated wear due to sand and mineral particulates
  • Clogging or inefficiency when viscosity changes between batches
  • Limited mobility or adaptability within evolving plant layouts
  • Inconsistent nutrient distribution and additive dispersion

These constraints reduce production reliability, maintenance intervals and long-term operating efficiency.

Previously unsuccessful methods

Fristam’s solution

A large Fristam PM04 Powder Mixer supported by an FZ22 self priming liquid ring pump and FS 353 shear blender within a portable skid-mounted system, delivering:

  • Mobile, reconfigurable installation for flexible plant layouts
  • Efficient powder wetting and induction without external vacuum systems
  • Abrasion-resistant stainless-steel construction and hardened components for long service life
  • High-shear rotor-stator dispersion enabling uniform nutrient and additive distribution

This configuration provided a durable, energy-efficient and scalable mixing platform for bio-fertiliser slurry production.

Trial set-up

1. Base liquid was drawn into the system using a self-priming suction pump integrated within the Fristam Powder Mixer skid.

2. Dry powders and additives such as boric acid, calcium chloride and tripotassium citrate were introduced via the mixers induction funnel.

3. Strong suction from below the hopper, drew the powder into the liquid stream and ensured rapid powder wetting without clumping.

4. The mixture passed through the FS rotor-stator shear blender, where agglomerates were broken down by high-shear forces and dispersion completed.

5. When the product was evaluated – the customer confirmed that even the most abrasive organic particulates were processed smoothly while minimising wear and clogging. The resulting bio-fertiliser slurry achieved uniform nutrient distribution and consistent viscosity, ready for downstream processing.

Similar applications

  • Fristam Powder Mixer technology is widely applied in liquid fertilisers, bio-stimulants, micronutrient suspensions and agrochemical formulations requiring reliable powder induction, abrasion resistance and homogeneous dispersion.
  • Typical powders incorporated in liquid fertiliser production include nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium salts, micronutrient sulfates, chelated trace elements, humic substances, seaweed extracts, stabilisers and pH-adjusting acids, all of which must be uniformly wetted and dispersed to ensure agronomic effectiveness.
  • Comparable challenges also arise in industrial chemical slurries, water-treatment suspensions, pigments and specialty coatings, where abrasion, viscosity variation and particle dispersion determine production reliability.

Frequently Asked Questions

Bio-fertilisers often contain organic solids, compost residues, sand particles and biological additives, creating a combination of abrasion, viscosity variability and dispersion sensitivity that standard mineral-slurry mixers are not designed to handle reliably.
