Based on the information you provided, we think you may require a Fristam FS - Shear Blender.
FS – High-shear blender
The Fristam Shear Blender is a high-performance mixer, which reduces particle sizes efficiently within liquid mixtures. The high-shear mixing technology ensures every product batch is uniform, free from clumps - with a smooth, homogenous finish.
The Fristam Shear Blender is used when an existing mixing process has already added different ingredients to create a pre-mix. The job of the Shear Blender is to create the final shearing.
Typical selection logic:
Required
- High shear mixing
Not required
- Powder Induction
Key characteristics
- Rotor–stator shear mixing technology
- FS: mixer only
- FSP: mixer with integrated impeller for pumping
- Used for dispersing gums, stabilisers and functional ingredients

Powder Mixer, Blender & Colloid Mixer Selection – FAQs
Choosing the correct powder mixer depends on four core process parameters: powder induction requirement, required shear, product viscosity, and powder throughput. However, more complex factors such as the behaviour of the liquids, the density of the powder and other factors are also important to consider. Our Powder Mixer Selection Tool offers a basic guide to identify which style of Mixer might suit your process best, but our experts will be able to consult you on exactly which size and configuration of that model is required in order to achieve the best results!
A powder mixer consists of three core elements: a hopper for powder introduction, an induction pump that draws liquid into the system, and a shear blender that applies controlled mechanical energy to produce a homogeneous mixture. This configuration allows powders and liquids to be introduced directly into the process and dispersed efficiently within a single integrated system.
A FS Shear Blender, by contrast, is a dedicated blending device. Powders must already have been introduced earlier in the process, typically via a separate mixing or dosing step. The role of the shear blender is to apply shear to create uniform dispersion and eliminate agglomerates within the liquid mixture.
With the FS Shear Blender, this function can be extended further, as the unit is capable of both pumping and high-shear blending, enabling efficient inline processing without the need for a separate pump.
A high-shear powder mixer should be selected when:
- Powders tend to form lumps or agglomerates in their liquid
- Rapid hydration is required
- Product quality depends on eliminating undissolved particles
High-shear rotor–stator systems are especially effective for stabilizers, gums, proteins, and functional ingredients.
For very high-viscosity or high-solids formulations, a powder mixer designed specifically for dense products is required. These mixers provide:
- Stable vacuum powder induction
- Controlled powder draw to prevent floating or bridging
- Consistent shear even in thick pastes and concentrates
Standard powder mixers may struggle above certain viscosity thresholds without this enhanced design.
A powder dissolver is ideal when powder induction is required and shear requirements are moderate – however, the batch sizes are relatively small and product viscosity is low to medium.
The Fristam PL Powder Dissolver offers an economical solution for applications where extreme throughput or viscosity handling is not necessary.
All Fristam Mixers can support gentle powder incorporation to protect product texture and structure. When gentle blending is a requirement, our experts would recommend a powder mixer or blender with a rotor stator combination which supports a gentler blending.
These systems provide fast, uniform mixing while avoiding excessive mechanical stress, making them suitable for sensitive formulations.
A colloid mixer is selected when:
- Powder induction is not required
- Fine droplet size or emulsification is critical
- High, repeatable shear is needed
Colloid mixers are commonly used for emulsions, sauces, dressings, and products requiring droplet sizes down to sub-micron range.
A high-shear blender is typically used for final dispersion and particle size reduction after ingredients have already been combined.
A colloid mixer, by contrast, is designed for emulsification and droplet size control, offering finer and more precise shear adjustment.
Viscosity directly influences:
- Powder induction stability
- Required motor power
- Rotor–stator geometry
- Mixing efficiency
As viscosity increases, standard induction systems may lose efficiency, making high-viscosity-specific designs essential for consistent results. The Fristam PM-D is the ideal solution when high viscosity mixing is required, as it utilises a Fristam FDS double screw pump to draw in the thicker liquids and process them without compromise.
Vacuum-assisted powder induction:
- Reduces dusting
- Improves operator safety
- Ensures rapid, reliable powder wetting
- Reduces air entrainment
This technology is particularly valuable for fine powders and hygienic food, beverage, and pharmaceutical processes.
